Building a Search

Using the Search tab enables you to search the current files, deleted files, or all versions of files in all VMs or any individually-selected VM. You can use the CloudAdvisor Search Builder to add multiple search terms from multiple search options in the search bar.

  1. From the Home tab, select Discover > Search.
  2. If you want to base this search on a previously-saved search, select the saved search from the Saved Search drop-down list.
  3. If you want to specify a specific virtual machine on which to search, select it from the Search Target drop-down menu. The default setting (All) searches all VMs in inventory.
  4. If you want to include deleted files in the search, select the appropriate option from the File Version drop-down list. You can select:

    The Search Quick Reference opens to show some of the search syntax options and the Search Builder drop-down menu.

  6. Click Add Search Option to begin building your desired search.

    You can add multiple search terms to increase or decrease the search output. The following table briefly describes the different, top-level Search Builder options available.

    Content Enables you to search file content for specified terms or phrases. Using the Content Search Option
    Tag

    Enables you to search files using CloudAdvisor preconfigured intelligence tags or any custom intelligence tags that you have created. By default, this option enables you to search using the CloudAdvisor preconfigured intelligence tags.

    Using the Tag Search Option
    User Enables you to search on files based on file ownership or known user activities (reading or writing). This option searches for files that are owned, have been modified, or have been read by the specified user(s). Using the User Search Option
    File path Enables you to search on a full or partial file path. This option searches only file and directory names; it does not search file content. Using the File Path Search Option
    File property Enables you to search on a file property (for example, the file author, creation date, revision number, version, and so on). This option searches only file property values; it does not search file content. Using the File Properties Search Option
    Fingerprint Fingerprint allows you to search on the MD5 or SHA-1 checksum of the contents of a file. This search finds all files that contain the same content. Using the Fingerprint Search Option
    Created Enables you to search on files based on when they were created. Using the Created Search Option
    Modified Enables you to search on files based on when they were modified. Using the Modified Search Option
    Accessed Enables you to search on files based on when they were accessed Using the Accessed Search Option
  7. After you have finished specifying your search term, click Add.

    The Search Builder adds the textual equivalent of your selections to the search bar and automatically runs the search.

  8. If you want to add another search term, click in the search bar and select Add Search Option again. You can add as many search terms as you need. CloudAdvisor reruns the search after each new term is added.
